Permanent collection, USC Fisher Museum of Art.<\/p>\n<p>POEM: properties of x<\/p>\n<p>what could be believed\/<br \/>\nat the beginning of the 21st century\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 history,\/<br \/>\ntold with man-made stones\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 we hoped for prophecy\/<br \/>\nthe signature of the illiterate\/<br \/>\nheld true: the mark of death and birth\/<br \/>\ndaily with vigor, we cut our tongues\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the voiceless\/<br \/>\ngiven infinite joy by virtue of a hypothetical\/<\/p>\n<p>to protect the unknown\/<br \/>\nfrom the unknown, Xs were strategically placed\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 we were assured cross-\/<br \/>\nhairs guaranteed success\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cconvenience is our number one concern\u201d\/<br \/>\nalways regrettable, mistakes were made\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 taken away from the world\/<br \/>\nyou promised\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 to ward off evil, bones\/<br \/>\ncut and crossed, bundled and rubbed ochre (it\u2019s hard to believe)\/<br \/>\nblood red\/<\/p>\n<p>to honor the discovery of a comet,\/<br \/>\norbit unknown\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 answers were given\/<br \/>\nin the language of cryptology\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 how she wept\/<br \/>\nwhen they told her\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 (the long stream of blood)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 tether-bound,\/<br \/>\nunable to fly, she pruned herself featherless\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 on Vatican steps\/<br \/>\ntears formed wetlands\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the whole damn situation\/<br \/>\nFUBAR\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 you know\/<\/p>\n<p>how it is\/<br \/>\nwe followed the rules of subtraction\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the supreme,\/<br \/>\nsingular guiding principle\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 cut through nonsense wounds, only to find\/<br \/>\nelimination, erasure\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the inverse of matter\/<br \/>\nsome were repaired with stitches and staples\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 lacerations,\/<br \/>\nimpossibly prayed for\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cex-\/<br \/>\nsanguination is the leading cause of death\u201d\/<\/p>\n<p>how immortality pulled us\/<br \/>\ntoward the unknown<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cProperties of X,\u201d 6\/15 from 21st Century Retablo. 11.7\u2033 x 16,\u201d mixed-media on archival paper, 2005-06.
