Permanent collection, USC Fisher Museum of Art.<\/p>\n<p>POEM: arsenic, the cure for sleeping sickness<\/p>\n<p>our amaranthine boy is the son of action\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 as he descends\/<br \/>\neven deeper into the well\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 he stores his feelings in a secret\/<br \/>\nlittle pocket\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 he is tired of all the questions\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cif you live\/<br \/>\nwin two tickets to the Super Bowl\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 consequences gather\/<\/p>\n<p>at the rim \u2013 he is taking it very literally to watch over me \u2013\/<br \/>\nimmortality pulls him\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 toward the unknown\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the man\/<br \/>\nof the house, he is measured by what can\u2019t be seen\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 dark\/<br \/>\nmatter surrounds\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 and all that is down there\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 disappears\/<\/p>\n<p>behind a scattered shower\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 he accepts the metallic\/<br \/>\npast of his dead father\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 valor, sacrifice, breed on the ground\/<br \/>\nof the Rose Garden\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 wounds open on his little fingers\/<br \/>\nnot even nuclear forces can resist\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the sacrifice of a soldier\/<\/p>\n<p>turns a boy into a man\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 measured through nonsense\/<br \/>\nwounds, to \u201cpreserve daily life\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the boy falls,\/<br \/>\nhe has no direction\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the perfect example of expeditionary\/<br \/>\nthis war for the future will be fought by hand-\/<\/p>\n<p>knives\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 kinetic, maddening, it\u2019s time to stop\/<br \/>\nblowing things up\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 with this sense of failure, he feels\/<br \/>\noutgunned\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 there is only one way\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 down below,\/<br \/>\na warrior\u2019s country club\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the battle for\u00a0 heart\/<\/p>\n<p>and blind\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 this is what it means to be hit\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 in this\/<br \/>\naphotic hollow nest, surrounded by ghosts of the voiceless\/<br \/>\nprophecy\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cour soporific boy, how will you sleep?\/<br \/>\nthere is no cure for destiny!\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cArsenic, the cure for sleeping sickness,\u201d 7\/15 from 21st Century Retablo. 11.7\u2033 x 16,\u201d mixed-media on archival paper, 2005-06.
