Permanent collection, USC Fisher Museum of Art.<\/p>\n<p>POEM: make it work<\/p>\n<p>the mother was lost\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 none could resist the pull of gravity\/<br \/>\nwho fell in the end\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 of the continuum\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 an observer of culture, she knew\/<br \/>\nhow to follow the protocols, requirements\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 still, she failed to fit\/<br \/>\nthe public system of grief\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the process of disruption\/<\/p>\n<p>reinforced faults\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the call of mourning doves woke her\/<br \/>\nin her hands, the dusty remnants of blue feathers\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 it happened\/<br \/>\nso quickly, the destruction\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 casual, happenstance\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 she wove\/<br \/>\na heavy blanket, unstable, as if to move too much would invite\/<\/p>\n<p>falling\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the feathers caught on broken branches\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 no\/<br \/>\nvisible light could escape\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 his hands became her gloves, gently cross-\/<br \/>\nstitched\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 one stitch followed another\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 would there be no end\/<br \/>\nto her suffering\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 she raised the prospect of irreversible damage\/<\/p>\n<p>an uncertain outcome over an uncertain timetable\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 if the progenitor\/<br \/>\nmass was larger, the resultant core was too heavy\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 no matter\/<br \/>\nhow energetic\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cmake it work through discipline and order\u201d\/<br \/>\nshe hoped the mark would outlast her \/<\/p>\n<p>so much was suspect when all was formed of belief\/<br \/>\nto move things forward\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cstuff your womb with crinkled paper\/<br \/>\nto prevent pregnancy\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 as two children holding hands, the world\/<br \/>\nrevolved around her\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 what could be believed in the beginning \/<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cMake It Work,\u201d 12\/15 from 21st Century Retablo. 11.7\u2033 x 16,\u201d mixed-media on archival paper, 2005-06.
