Permanent collection, USC Fisher Museum of Art.<\/p>\n<p>POEM:<\/p>\n<p>the principle of decay<\/p>\n<p>pressure exceeds all meaning\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0and all that is down there\/<br \/>\nthroughout the celestial empire, plans are never made, only\/<br \/>\nexecuted\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cif it was your life you\u2019d care\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 faith\/<br \/>\nfelled by death sounds echoes through man-\/<br \/>\nmade caverns\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0overhead, carnivorous birds circle\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I held\/<\/p>\n<p>hands soiled by the erroneous belief in resurrection\/<br \/>\nor at least rest \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0belies the concrete truth spelled out in shattered\/<br \/>\ncraters made with bullets\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0spent casings spread beneath\/<br \/>\nweave a heavy, unstable blanket, held together only by principle:\/<br \/>\nrapid decline, short lifetime\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 properties of the radioactive\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I see\/<\/p>\n<p>the truth\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 she was born of decay\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 she came to a place not free\/<br \/>\nof blemish or flaw, naturally made by water\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 nonsense\/<br \/>\nwounds heal when brushed with Chimayo dirt, not\/<br \/>\nspittle from a broken mouth\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0and all that is down there\/<br \/>\npressures meaning to reveal itself\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 radioactive\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cI am\/<\/p>\n<p>now a sojourner\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 born of the reactive\/<br \/>\nviolent by process and principle\u201d\/<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;The Principle of Decay,&#8221; 15\/15 from 21st Century Retablo. 11.7&#8243; x 16,&#8221; mixed-media on archival paper, 2005-06.
